Lake Como travel story: Falling in love with Lake Como

This is the story of how I fell in love with Lake Como, from India with love!

“Did you say Lake Como?”

“The Lake Como?” I reconfirmed when my husband, on my first trip to Italy in 2008,  told me that we were going to Como, the largest town on Lake Como, the day after.

I had read about Lake Como. Well, I had read that one of my favorite and undoubtedly one of the most renowned writers of history Mark Twain had also visited Como. Another of my favorite, whose work I also read during Graduation, Ernest Hemmingway had mentioned Lake Como in a few of his works.

Let me confess, I was also excited because I knew celebrities like George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta Jones have been residents of this Lake. A lot of Indian Celebrities, famous movie star often visit Lake Como for vacation.

Well, the day after, I got up a little earlier than usual and I got ready. Those who know me well know that I am not much into make-up but, that day I did put some. Probably daydreaming “What if I bump into George Clooney or Brad Pitt or any Indian Celebrity?”. Well, I was going with my own ‘Brad Pitt’, my husband. We took the train from Cadorna in Milan and reached the train station, Como Lago Nord. It is just 200 mts from the Lake.

As we came out of the station, I saw for the first time one of the deepest lakes in Europe. Its beauty mesmerized me. Its water was of such a dark green it reminded me of my grandmother’s emeralds! We took a stroll on Lakeside and then we went to visit the city centre. The Duomo (the main church) the beautiful Piazza Cavour and many other architectural beauties, which really speak a lot of Italian Architecture. Until then I had not visited Rome, which I visited a month after this, and so for me, Como was really my first encounter with Italian architecture.

It was around lunchtime so we decided to have lunch. I had for the first time polenta, which is made of cornflour, now it has become one of my favorite dishes. Together with other Italian dishes! Another thing for which Como is famous is the silk so I did buy few ties for my ‘Brad Pitt’ and some other relatives.

Then we went on a boat, a small paddling boat for two people. The newlywed me still remembers that day and would probably always as one of the most romantic boat rides of my life. Well, the beauty of nature just added to the magic, the lake surrounded by the Alps was like Midas touch and even my not-so-expressive husband also couldn’t resist and told me how much he loves me.

We went back home, but the magic of the lake has always stayed with me. Now, we often go to Como especially around Christmas as the city is decorated beautifully. We park our car and walk to the centre as the narrow lanes have history embedded in them.

Every time I go there I learn new things, I taste new food (the Risotto with pesce persico is just delicious) and “il Lario” has started to become familiar even to somebody like me who was born on the other side of the world. Is this the reason why George has made of these places his second home? The lake gets under your skin and you cannot help but love it.
