If you have heard about the famous novel “The Betrothed”, “I Promessi Sposi” by Alessandro Manzoni, you surely have also heard about the town near Milan – Lecco.
The Betrothed was first published in 1827, in three volumes. It has been called the most famous and widely read novel in the Italian language. The story has been set between the years 1628 and 1630 in the town of Lecco and neighboring areas, during this period the village was under Spanish domination.
The Betrothed tells the story of the troubled love between the young Renzo and Lucia; what makes the story so special and interesting, is that it has been intertwined with real historical facts and characters of the seventeenth century.
Even today Lecco and its surroundings are full of legendary mementos, especially in Pescarenico, which has in it the church of the Santi Materno and Lucia.
Alessandro Manzoni’s Museum is an attraction for lovers of literature. If you love The Betrothed you would also be interested in visiting Don Rodrigo’s Palace and Lucia’s house that are visible only from the outside. Castle of Innominato in Vercurago is another delight.
